The Enhancement to PTE’s Scoring: Everything You Must Know
Recently, PTE Academic announced a scoring enhancement in its speaking section. From November 4, 2024, human intervention has been introduced to two Speaking questions-‘Describe Image’ and ‘Retell lecture’. This enhancement ensures a check over exceptions and anomalies, providing a fair evaluation to the test taker.
What does the enhancement entail?
Following the enhancement, the two question types of the Speaking section, viz. ‘Describe Image’ and ‘Retell lecture’ will be checked by the AI system and human experts. Humans will now validate the scores provided by AI in these two questions to improve the scoring of aspirants from around the world. The questions will be scored as follows:
- Content- Scored between 0 to 5
- Oral Fluency- Scored between 0 to 5
- Pronunciation- Scored between 0 to 5
While oral fluency and pronunciation will be evaluated by the AI system, content will be reviewed by humans for its accuracy and originality. This change has been brought to provide a fair and balanced assessment with a blend of AI and humans. Now, there is an extra check over the responses to evaluate the test taker’s understanding of the English language.
The human reviewer will check the content for two things:
- 1. Originality of the content: It should be noted that the content should use original words and not something memorized or from pre-prepared templates.
- 2. Relevance of the content: The response should match the requirement of the task and address the key elements of the image or lecture
This step has ensured that the responses are unique, original, and relevant. Furthermore, the enhancement to PTE’s scoring method is beneficial for the test taker as it has increased fairness.
