Speaking: Answer Short Questions: Tips and Strategies
This Speaking question requires you to provide a one-word or brief answer to a question you hear. You will listen to a short audio which may be accompanied by an image (also based on the question). Immediately after the question, as the microphone opens, you must start answering (there is no short tone). You have 10 seconds to answer it.Once the bar reaches the end, the word “Recording” gets replaced with “Completed”.

IMPORTANT: If you remain silent for longer than 3 seconds, the recording will stop.
Scoring: The question assesses your ability to answer the question in one or a few words. So, scoring is based on whether the answer is correct or incorrect. No credit is given for an incorrect answer or no response.
Tips &strategies for Answer Short Questions
- 1. Be attentive: Make sure you are attentive when the audio is being played. It will be played only once.
- 2. Do not wait too long: If you wait more than 2 seconds to start speaking, you may lose the opportunity to answer the question. Keep an eye on the recording status box. Also, if you take a gap of 3 seconds while answering the question, the recording will stop.
- 3. Be brief: You need to provide the answer to the question in one word or a few words. Do not try to elongate it as the time may run out.
- 4. Do not hesitate: Try and stay calm when you answer the question. This will help you in recording a clear and right answer.
- 5. Read more: The questions in this section are based on your general knowledge. So, try and stay updated about your surroundings by reading more.
- 6. Practice: Try answering simple and current affairs questions every day. This will help to prepare your mind to respond faster.
